Salmon and Trout Association: Policy

Game anglers for fish, people and environment

S&TA covers two inter-related subjects:

Fisheries: the management, protection and conservation of fish stocks and the aquatic environment necessary for them to thrive – the resource

Angling: the leisure activity which relies on the resource for its existence, and provides proven social, economic and environmental benefits to society

S&TA’s niche role in angling and fisheries conservation is to influence government and agency national policies over relevant issues by providing well balanced arguments supported by sound, peer-reviewed science. We always look at the wider picture, placing angling and fisheries within an overall view of the aquatic world, both freshwater and marine. We stress the social, economic and environmental benefits of angling and fisheries, and show how they benefit the management and conservation of the aquatic environment, fish and all other water-dependent species, and the human communities reliant on them.

Our staff members have a close working relationship with senior officials in UK government ministries, the Scottish Executive, and many government agencies, including The Environment Agency (EA), Natural England (NE) and Scottish National Heritage (SNH). Our scientific department has strong links to universities and other research organisations, and constantly updates the S&TA scientific database as new information becomes available. Our scientific papers (see: Key Issues) are therefore ‘live’ documents and regularly updated to ensure that the latest information is available to our supporters, and to inform our influencing work.
