S&TA Environment & Technical Committee to consider agricultural impact

The E&T Committee is to embrace the question of agricultural impact on the aquatic environment, and what measures should be taken to protect fragile ecosystems from human interference.

The E&T Committee is to embrace the question of agricultural impact on the aquatic environment, and what measures should be taken to protect fragile ecosystems from human interference.

The E&T Committee has two new members; Professor Lynda Warren, who chaired the group which reviewed fisheries legislation for the Government, and Dr Arlin Rickard, Director of the West Country Rivers Trust, and also of the Association of Rivers Trusts.

A new working group has been set up under the Chairmanship of Dr Graeme Harris, which is to be called the Agri-environment Group. Lynda Warren and Arlin Rickard will be members, together with James Carr (River Eden Trust), Chris Rothwell (land management background) and Mark Ferguson (chalkstream and water resources).

This represents one of the most powerful groups the Association has put together on a specific subject, and will meet for the first time at the end of April. Once we have a clear idea how fisheries interests should approach agri-environment issues, with particular reference to the Water Framework and Habitats Directives, and the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, recommendations will be made as to how the Association should proceed with its lobbying. In particular, the group will identify other non-governmental organisations with a common interest who might make useful allies.
